About Indore

Indore is called the ' Mini Mumbai ' of India, situated on the Malwa plateau at an altitude of 553 m above sea level, on the banks of two small rivulets - the Saraswati and the Khan. They unite at the centre of the city where a small 18th century temple of Sangamnath or Indreshwar exists. The name Indore is due to this diety. It is the largest city in Madhya Pradesh state in central India. It is among the million+ population cities of India with a population of 1,086,673 (1991). It is the commercial capital of the state of Madhya Pradesh. Indore city presents a happy blend of historical past and promises of rapid future modernization.
Indore is a major industrial town of Madhya Pradesh. Nearby town of Pithampur houses many leading industries such as Hindustan Motors, Eicher, Bajaj, Bridgestone, L&T, etc. The electronic complex in the city also houses offices of some of the top IT companies in the country. Indore is also a major educational center in MP with many engineering and management institutions. Devi Ahilya University (Indore University) is ranked as topmost university of central India. It is also prominent for its healthcare facilities with leading hospitals and pharmaceutical companies. One of the best hospital in India Bombay Hospital has opened it's new hospital in Indore. Weather :-
Winter: In winter (November to February), the night low is around 10 °C. At the peak of winter, it can be as low as 2 °C to 3 °C.
The record low is +1.5 °C.

Summer: During summer (April-June) the days are hot (35 to 40 °C) with the peak summer (May) day temperature sometimes touching 45 °C. However, unlike other places in central India, the summer nights in Indore are something special. Due to its location on the southern edge of the Malwa Plateau, however hot it may be during the day, in the late evening, cool breeze starts which makes the evenings quite pleasant, referred to as Shab-e-Malwa.

Rainfall: Indore gets moderate rainfall of 30 to 35 inches (760 to 890 mm) during July-September due to the southwest monsoon.

Attractions In & Around  
Chhatri Baug :- Chhatris or cenotaphs erected in memory of the Holkar rulers and their families are incomparable examples of Maratha architecture and sculpture. These Chhatris were the temples where Holkars used to attend Poojas. The largest and the most impressive is that of Malhar Rao Holkar I lavishly decorated with frescoes.

Indore Museum :- The Indore museum housing the finest collection of Parmar sculptures from Hinglajgarh is also known for its collection of coins, arms and armours. The Parmar style originated here and is characterized by proportionate figures, carefully and ornately depicted in stone.
Kala Kund :- Kala-kund is another beautiful spot on the way to Khandwa by train. After crossing the river in Shanker Valley there is a beautiful fall, above which is a natural swimming pool - like 'Kunda'. A dip and bath in the 'Kunda’ gives great pleasure.

Kamala Nehru Park :- (Zoo)Popularly known as Chidiya Ghar, it combines the pleasure of a park and zoo. Evening attractions include elephant rides, camel rides, pony rides, goat cart and buggy rides. It has a restaurant and an ice cream parlour overlooking the Khan river.

Kanch Mandir :- This Jain temple is an architectural marvel in glass, built by The “Cotton King” Sir Hukamchand in the early 20th century. The walls, ceiling, floor, pillars and doors are entirely inlaid with glass. There are paintings done in coloured glass depicting stories from Jain scriptures. At the top is a special glass chamber, which multiplies the three statues of Lord Mahavir, into an infinite number.

Lal Baug Palace :- It is one of the grandest monuments the Holkar dynasty reflecting the taste, grandeur and lifestyle of the Holkars. It is the ancestral palace of the rulers. Many royal receptions were held here and at one time it contained one of the best rose gardens of the country.


Rajwada :- The Holkar Palace (Rajwada) is close to the Chhatris, in the main square. It is a seven-storied building (only facade remains) built over two centuries and is built in a mixture of Maratha, Mughal and French style.

Sukh Niwas :- Sukh Niwas Palace is a historical building made by Holkar rulers with a mixture of Indian and Western styles in its architecture. It was converted into a Picnic Resort.
